OCTOBER 1, 2003 Exercise to Live to Be 100 With the proper diet and regular exercise, you can live to be 100. Add in hormone therapy, and you could reach 120 or beyond. "Life spans up to 120 years are possible, and will be commonplace for the baby boom generation," says Dr. Ronald Klatz, a nationally known expert on anti-aging medicine. "Anyone who dies before age 100 has died too young." "Anti-aging medicine is not science fiction, but at the cutting edge of science," says Dr. Klatz, who has written eight books, including Stopping the Clock. "The four leading causes of death -- cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes -- can be eliminated with diet and exercise." Here are the most important key dietary tips to beat the top four killers, according to Dr. Klatz: Cancer Increase your intake of antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E as well as selenium and bioflavonoids, such as the B complex vitamins. Early detection of cancer can also have a major impact. We now have technologies to recognize almost all forms of cancer at stage 1, when 90% are curable. Heart Disease Take vitamins E and C, aspirin, fish oils, and Coenzyme Q-10 to keep the linings of your arteries healthy and to protect the heart muscle from the damage of not enough oxygen. Stroke Take bioflavonoids to maintain the strength of your artery walls. Diabetes Consume chromium supplements as well as the trace mineral vanadium to maintain pancreatic health and to help control insulin and blood sugar. Eat small meals every four hours to maintain a stable blood sugar. Regular Exercise "Regular exercise reduces your risk of these diseases, and cuts it in half for diabetes," says Dr. Klatz. He recommends exercising three to five times a week for at least 20 minutes to get the most benefit. "Exercise reduces body fat and strengthens the heart, bones, and joints. In addition, it stimulates the release of chemicals in the brain that regulate hormones throughout the body." |
