Yamuna Body Rolling Trains Muscles

Imagine a workout that feels like a deep-tissue massage. Both non-exercisers and exercise enthusiasts can benefit by Yamuna Body Rolling, an innovative technique that uses various size balls to stretch muscles and increase blood flow. "People who work out vigorously can use Body Rolling to unwind and to elongate their muscles," says developer Yamuna Zake, a New York bodywork practitioner. "Even people who are overweight or badly out of shape find Body Rolling not only doable but enjoyable. It is exercise in a non-exercise form, one that combines the relaxing, pleasurable effects of massage with the toning effect of exercise."

Body-therapy practitioners like Zake know the importance of correcting postural patterns before training muscles. "People who have not been exercising with any regularity might suddenly begin a fitness program. But they almost certainly come to a quick halt due to injury, simply because they did not first take the time to feel and understand their own bodies," she says.

Her new book, The Ultimate Body Rolling Workout (Broadway Books, 2004), written with New York health writer Stephanie Golden, explains the underlying principles of her technique and tells how to get started, including instructions for basic back, side, and front routines. More detailed chapters focus on treating specific conditions such as lower back pain, shoulder and neck problems, and the effects of aging.

Most people can try Yamuna Body Rolling (www.yamunabodyrolling.com) with an inexpensive vinyl ball available in toy stores or large pharmacies, although Zake has developed a line of special balls that give the best results. An 8- to10-inch ball is best for working on the spine and an 6-inch ball for the shoulders and stomach. The exercises are done on a floor padded with an exercise mat, carpet, or yoga sticky mat.

By stretching and strengthening muscles, Body Rolling results in the long, lean dancer's physique accomplished through yoga and Pilates, plus a way to relieve pain and muscle tension.
