Wear a Helmet While Skiing, Snowboarding

Do as Olympians do - wear a helmet when skiing or snowboarding to prevent head injuries. As we just saw in Turin, Italy, all Olympic alpine skiers and snowboarders wear helmets, and recreational skiers should wear them, too, according to a new study.

A survey of 6,000 skiers and snowboarders at 8 Norwegian alpine resorts found those using a helmet had a 60% reduction in the risk of head injuries compared to those who did not use a helmet. Wearing a helmet also reduced the chances of a potentially severe head injury by 57%, as well as the risk of neck injuries.

Head injuries are the top reasons skiers and snowboarders enter the hospital, and 8% of those with head injuries die, according to the study by the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences in Oslo. Those at increased risk of head injuries include beginners, males, youths, and snowboarders. But helmets protect against head injuries for all groups. So if you're an elite skier or snowboarder - and especially if you're not - wear a helmet.
